Ferguson ran back to the hall as fast as he could. But the contract was gone! The table on which the contract had been a while ago was very clean now.
Shocked, he instantly reported it to Nigel over the phone. "Find it!" Nigel ordered in a cold tone.
Elvira was too afraid to speak.
Even though she didn’t finish reading the contract, its title A Marriage Contract made her feel that it must be ridiculous.
If it was lost and its contents were revealed to the others, there would be huge trouble for her and Nigel.
Elvira was worried. If Colette heard anything about the contract, she might use it as an excuse and kick her out of the home immediately.
Elvira pouted with a frown as she thought about it.
Looking at the expression on her face, Nigel smiled.
She was adorable even when she was frowning. He fell under the spell of her charm since the moment he laid his eyes on her.
"Don't worry," Nigel comforted her gently. "I’ll take care of it."
"Mr. He, I have already asked them to provide the surveillance footages,"
Ferguson reported.
"No need to look for it anymore."
Just then, Bernice walked over. "I have the contract," she said.
With a seductive smile, she handed the contract to Nigel.
He looked intently at her. Ferguson took the contract from Bernice. He glanced at Nigel and understood what he was thinking—Bernice must have read the contract.
But it was confidential. No one was supposed to know about its contents except Nigel and Elvira.
"Attend to it," Nigel said. Then he put his hand around Elvira’s waist and left with her.
He was on his way to the Civil Affairs Department to get his marriage license. Bernice wasn’t worthy of his time.
Ferguson nodded to him. After Nigel left, he looked at the hot woman in front of him and smiled.
Bernice maintained a smile which she thought was unfathomable, thinking that everything was under her control.
Ferguson guessed that she was going to use the contract to blackmail Nigel.
The woman was despicable. During the years when Ferguson had worked for Nigel, he had seen too many women like her. At a glance, he could see them through.
"How much?"
Ferguson asked directly.
"How much what?"
Bernice played dumb.
"You know very well what I mean. Why don’t you cut the crap and say what you want?"
he remarked, mocking Bernice inwardly.
The despicable are all hypocrites.
"You must be joking. I happened to see the contract on the table and thought I should return it to Mr. He. That’s all."
Bernice sounded very calm.
For a long while, Ferguson didn’t say a word. Then he began, "Thank you, Miss Tian."
He wondered what she was up to. If it wasn’t money, then it must be something else.
Ferguson was sure that Bernice would be a big pain in the ass in the future.
"Miss Tian, you are a smart woman. I think you know what consequences you’ll have to bear if you leak any details of it," he warned her.
Bernice smiled, not a trace of fear in her face. I’d be a fool if I only asked a small sum of money for such a huge secret.
Wait and see. I’ll return that smack you gave me, with interest! she swore inside.
Ferguson gave her one last look and walked away.
No need to rush. I’ll deal with her if she dare make trouble, he thought to himself.
Standing at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Department, Elvira was hesitant whether to enter or not.
It felt reckless to decide to get married so fast. This was a big decision after all. On the other hand, although she didn’t know why Nigel had chosen her to get married to, she was tempted a little by the plan.
Nigel was aware of what she was worried about. He was always surrounded by admirers.
Attracted to his power and wealth, those women fawned over him and threw themselves at him. Some even pestered him shamelessly.
Nigel never paid attention to them.
However, he had a different feeling about Elvira. She was simple and innocent. Seeing that she was still hesitating, he couldn’t wait anymore.
He was worried that she might chicken out any minute.
He had to marry her. The earlier the better.
So he bent over and carried her on his shoulder.
It wasn’t up to her now.
He grinned and strode into the Civil Affairs Department, carrying her on the shoulder. She would become his wife, today!
When she sat down on the couch in Nigel’s villa, Elvira was still in a daze. Was she married now?
She still couldn’t believe it. She had just graduated from university. How could she have married so early?
Nigel dismissed Ferguson with a wave of his hand.
Looking at Elvira, he was so thrilled he grinned from ear to ear.
It was as if he had just gotten the first prize in a lottery.
He had never been so happy.
And he and Elvira had met on a plane. It was like fate.
He reached out and stroked her hair. Elvira turned around to look at him.
"You must be hungry,"
Nigel said with a smile, his eyes full of affection.
He couldn’t conceal his feelings. His eyes wouldn’t lie.
Elvira was surprised. It was dinner time already?
She had just gotten married with a man she barely knew.
Her mind had been so preoccupied she didn’t even notice the time.
But now that he brought it up, she found herself hungry.
She nodded and looked at him. The look in her eyes told him that she was famished.
"I’ll cook something for you."
Nigel stood up from the couch and walked into the kitchen.
Elvira’s eyes widened in disbelief.
Cook?
As the general major of the air force, he’ll cook for me himself?
She had assumed Nigel must have grown up in a rich family and was spoiled. It really shocked her to know that he could cook.
After a while, the dinner was ready. When she looked at the lumpy dishes, Elvira gulped and felt stumped.
It would be embarrassing if she didn’t eat. But were they really edible?
When she heard the bangs and clanks coming from the kitchen, she had anticipated that he might not be as good at cooking as she thought. But this was even worse.
She took the chopsticks and picked up something. It was really hard to tell what it was from the looks of it. She put it into her mouth and chewed.
"How is it?"
Nigel asked expectantly, his eyes sparkling.
Elvira swallowed and forced a smile. "Yum!"
"Really?"
Nigel picked up a lot of it and began to eat.
