    Chapter 5 Falling in Love

Elvira recalled how astonished Wilt Chen had been when he had seen Nigel’s card at the cafe the day before. It showed how menacing Nigel was in H City.

"I treated you respectfully, but you didn't give a damn. Are you trying to push me to be rough?" Nigel said as he returned her phone.

She took it timidly. She searched his name on her phone. What came up made her gape.

    Is he pulling my legs?

No, he must be crazy. How can someone as powerful as him possibly like an ordinary girl like me?

Her eyes couldn’t turn away anymore when she saw the last piece of news on the first page. She herself was in the picture!

Both the picture and the caption were eye-catching. It said Nigel and Wilt had fought over a girl and the latter lost.

The news wasn’t long, but it had hundreds of thousands of hits already.

"Are...are you searching information on me?" Nigel asked in a softer tone when he saw the shocked look on her face.

"Why didn’t you just ask me? As your fiancé, I will come into the open with you. You can ask me anything you want."

However, Elvira’s mind wandered away when she heard him say "come into the open with you." An intimate image popped into her head. Instantly, her face was red like a tomato. Nigel was more tempted. He was fighting his urge to kiss her.

Sensing his reaction, she cringed into a corner to stay away him.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, Ferguson remained silent.

The car sped along the streets. The view outside flashed past quickly. But Elvira was in no mood to enjoy the view. Even if she wanted to know more about Nigel, she didn’t know where to begin.

Right now, she only wanted to run away from him, the man who made her heart race and intimidated her.

None of her emotion escaped his eyes. He detected her vulnerability, her helplessness, and her fear.

The woman in front of him reminded him of himself at 10. Whether she would marry him or not, he wanted to help her.

Nigel sighed. He lit a cigarette and leaned back in the seat. Somehow, he looked dejected. "If you won’t marry you, I will take you home then."

Elvira opened her mouth. She had intended to turn him down, but the words caught in her throat, reluctant to come out.

Am I doing the right thing to reject such a handsome, rich man’s proposal?

I might never meet another man as rich as he is.

But he is so bossy, so unreasonable. He never cares about what I think. What else will I get except the great title "Mrs. Nigel He" if I marry him?

    Love?

    Oh, bullshit!

Since the day she understood what the word "love" meant, Elvira had never believed love anymore. What had happened to her mom taught her that love was nothing but bullshit.

    "Ferguson, to Miss Tao’s place,"

    Nigel said.

    "Wait!"

Just as Ferguson was about to turn the car around, Elvira spoke. "I didn’t finish reading the contract just now. Can you explain the clauses to me?

    I...I’ll think about it."

Elvira bit her lower lip nervously, hoping she wasn’t making a mistake. At least this marriage would provide her everything in materials. She would leave that home sooner or later. No one cared about her in that home.

It was only then that Nigel realized the contract had been left in the hall of the airline.

If anybody saw it, it would certainly become a hot topic of the city.

"Turn around! Go back to find the contract! Quick!" he ordered anxiously.

A second ago, Nigel had been smiling when he heard that Elvira had agreed to his proposal, but now once again, he had put on a long face.

Ferguson knew how serious the matter was. Wasting no time, he hit the gas to the floor and drove as fast as he could.

Elvira’s face turned pale with fright. She grabbed the handle on the car door to steady herself. Her heart pounded as she prayed there wouldn’t be an accident.

    Nigel noticed her pale face.

As soon as the car came to a halt on the parking lot, Ferguson darted toward the airline’s hall.

Elvira and Nigel stayed inside the car. The atmosphere was quite awkward.

Nigel never knew how to flatter a girl. He was always harsh and mean. Now that they were about to get married, he didn’t even know how to talk about it with her.

The awkwardness thickened. It was either because of the speeding of the car or because she was alone with Nigel, Elvira felt her heart was about to jump out of her chest; her face was burning. She shifted uncomfortably in the seat.

    "Are you hungry?"

He cleared his throat and asked, handing a packet of snacks to her.

Nigel had aimed to break the awkward silence, but unexpectedly, he had only made it worse.

Elvira was too embarrassed to say yes.

Of course she was hungry. Had he even had to ask? He had come to her workplace early in the morning to make trouble for her. She had been in such a rush to leave her home she hadn’t even had time for breakfast.

But even so, Elvira turned to Nigel and forced a smile. "No, I’m not hungry. Thank you all the same," she lied.

Nigel's hand froze in midair. Just then, her stomach began growling. She couldn’t be more humiliated.

    "Hmm, it’s so yummy,"

he said to her exaggeratedly after taking out a box of sushi and taking a bite. Then he pushed the box closer to her.

"Have a bite," he offered again.

Nigel continued to make exaggerated expressions, trying to tell her how good the sushi was.

Elvira was amused. How could a major general of the air force be so childish? And he was tempting her with food.

What did he think she was?

    An animal in the zoo?

Seeing her smile, he was surprised and then smiled too. This was the first time she had smiled at him.

It was a genuine smile. A beautiful one. An intoxicating one.

Nigel could hear his heart beating rapidly. One...two...three...this must be what love felt like.

It was said that when the one came, even time would stop, and she would be the only existence in your world.

This was how Nigel felt. It was as if all the other things around him had vanished. He only had eyes for her. Happiness filled him.

He looked her in the eye. His eyes were like the water of a serene lake. Elvira felt uneasy.

How capricious this man is! she thought.

Just like that, they looked at each other silently for a long time. When they realized how odd it was, they both burst out laughing. The awkwardness was finally gone.
