As soon as Nigel put the food in his mouth, he grimaced. Yuck! It tastes like foot! How did she possibly swallow it? And she told me it was yummy!
He forced himself to swallow it. It was the most terrible thing he had ever eaten.
But since Elvira had swallowed it, he felt it embarrassing to spit it out.
"Let’s not eat it anymore," he declared.
He was mad at himself, but he tried not to let his anger show.
This was the first time he had cooked for a woman. It was supposed to be a celebration for their marriage. He hadn’t expected it to be so embarrassing.
Elvira stared at him cautiously.
She didn’t know him yet, but she could sense that he was upset about something.
"Let's order delivery," he said.
He looked up and smiled at her, tilting his head.
It surprised her that he didn’t throw a tantrum. He doesn’t look good-tempered.
He was bossy and rarely thought of other people’s feelings, but he seemed considerate enough now to her. The atmosphere in the room became a little awkward, though.
After all, their marriage was hasty, and Elvira was very young. She needed time to get used to living with a man.
Nigel was also careful around Elvira. This was the first time he cared about someone. He was trying to be considerate and tender.
He had been serving in the force for many years. Meanwhile, he was familiar with the business world. He was decisive and ruthless. His enemies all lost miserably.
He always got what he wanted. But when he was with Elvira, somehow he felt nervous.
What should he do?
With her, he was no longer that overbearing man. He just wanted to be her gentle lover.
Half an hour passed. Elvira sat there without a word. Nigel didn’t know what was on her mind.
Neither did he know what to do with the situation. The awkward silence thickened. He stole a glance at her, like a gawky teenager peeking at the girl he liked in class.
As the darkness deepened, Elvira got more and more nervous.
Nigel hadn’t offered to take her home yet. The moment he carried her into the Civil Affairs Department, she realized that he didn’t accept defiance.
Besides, he was a powerful Major General of the air force while she was only an ordinary flight attendant.
"Well, let's talk about the contract."
Finally, Elvira broke the silence.
"Oh, okay. It’s over here."
Nigel handed her the contract, his heart racing. He was nervous.
Elvira started reading it. It said, "Since the day Party A and Party B register their marriage, they become husband and wife. Party A will afford Party B’s routine expenses."
Most of the clauses seemed to be to Elvira’s advantage, until she saw the last clause, which went, "Party B has no right to file a divorce. The expiration date of their marriage is decided by Party A."
Elvira was stunned. It was unfair.
She was furious.
"I married you, but I’m not your slave!"
she yelled.
Nigel had expected her to react like this. "As you can see, many clauses are to your advantage, right? But if you divorce me tomorrow, I’ll still have to give you half my property. That’s not fair. So without that clause, I’m at high risk. I think you can understand," he explained calmly.
On second thought, he seemed to have a point. No one wanted to lose money in a deal, especially businessmen.
But the last clause still bugged her. It felt as if she had signed a slave contract. Then she stood up and announced, "I’m sorry, Mr. He. I can’t agree to the last clause."
Nigel’s heart skipped a beat. Is she thinking of pulling out? I won’t allow it!
"I won’t take a penny from you. Let’s get divorced tomorrow," she said.
Nigel couldn't remain calm anymore. They had just gotten married, and now she was talking about getting a divorce. This was ridiculous.
He wasn’t afraid of getting a divorce. The thing was, now that he married her, a divorce was never part of his plan.
The only thing that concerned him was that she wasn’t happy.
Nigel took her hand in his own and asked, "Can we talk about it?"
Elvira hesitated.
Colette was trying to get rid of her and make a fortune by marrying her off. Elvira would rather marry herself off than let that woman get her way.
Certainly, Nigel looked much better than Wilt. To think about it, marrying him didn’t seem a bad idea.
"What's on your mind?" Elvira conceded, sighing.
In the end, they agreed to limit their marriage to three years.
In three years, the contract would be invalid.
They signed the contract. With her signature on the contract, now Elvira couldn’t pick flaws anymore.
Squinting, Nigel thought to himself,
Three years?
You’re stuck with me for the rest of your life!
Seeing that Elvira acquiescently accepted him as her husband, he was happy.
His first step had been a victory. Then they were going to start their new life as a couple.
Later, Elvira went to her bedroom to take a shower. When she walked out of the bathroom, she found Nigel reading on the bed, nude, leaning against the headboard. Her heart started pounding, and her face was burning up.
The navy blue comforter only covered his private part.
His long legs overlapped. His chest heaved slightly as he breathed. A strand of his black hair fell in his deep-set eyes.
Elvira was surprised to find him lying on the bed.
She couldn’t deny that he was very attractive.
Nigel pretended not to notice her. He pretended to be reading attentively, but out of the corner of his eye, he was observing her. He tried so hard to stifle his laughter.
Actually, he did it on purpose.
He wanted to see her blush and get flustered. It would be adorable.
And just as he had expected, Elvira was nervous. She stood there and struggled about what to do. Nigel continued with his plan.
He closed his book and said to her, "What’s the matter, honey?
Come over. Time for bed."
His smile looked so innocent, and his tone sounded so calm. It was as if they were a normal couple that had lived together for a long time.
When he called her "Honey," he hesitated a little.
After all, this was the first time he had called someone by that form of address. Yet, when he said it, it felt great.
Elvira didn’t know that Nigel was enjoying the moment. She only felt that he was tempting her.
