His bare body seemed to be screaming, "Touch me! I’m sturdy!"

Elvira shook her head to clear her mind. Then she walked over to Nigel, but she wasn’t going to have sex with him.

Nigel was surprised to see her coming over. He hadn’t expected her to be so bold.

He gulped nervously. What is she doing?

He maintained his composure, but deep down, he was excited. Is she going to have sex with me on the first night of our marriage?

"You sleep in the next room," Elvira declared with arms akimbo, holding her head high. Refusal was written all over her face.

"I’m your husband. Of course we should sleep together."

Nigel clutched the comforter, refusing to leave.

Elvira pouted with a long face, her eyes widened.

Nigel assumed she was going to flare up.

He was only teasing her. But now it seemed that she had taken it seriously.

The grin on his face disappeared. He looked her in the eye and gulped nervously, afraid that she was going to hit the roof.

Elvira’s lips were dry, and she was having a headache.

It baffled her what to do with Nigel.

She was a little afraid of him after all.

It was true that he had been nice to her. But Elvira thought it was surreal.

Besides, they were alone in the same bedroom. What could she do if he lost control over his urges?

Seeing that she wasn’t reacting, Nigel suddenly pushed the comforter aside.

    "What are you doing?

    Pervert!"

Elvira screamed and covered her eyes with her hands.

Nigel was startled by her scream. When he realized why she had screamed, he laughed out loud.

He walked over to her and pried her hands away from her eyes. "What are you thinking?"

He flicked her head and left the room with another comforter in his arms.

He was wearing boxer shorts. Looking at his retreating figure, Elvira rubbed her chin, thinking,

It turns out the air force Major General likes boxer shorts.

    Wait!

    It doesn’t feel right.

Why did he leave without even putting on a fight?

    What is he up to?

She approached the door to listen, trying to find out what Nigel was doing.

Unexpectedly, the door was suddenly pushed open from the other side. Caught off guard, she fell on the floor.

She raised her head and saw Nigel looking at her with a confused expression on his aloof face, his head tilted. For a moment, she was engrossed in his chiseled features.

He scooped her up and carried her onto the bed. "The floor is cold," he said quietly.

She blushed. "Call me if you need anything. I’ll be in the next room," he added.

He patted her head. The expression on his face was so serious. She felt he was doting on her. Warm surged through her body.

He was treating her like a baby, she realized.

And he acted like an innocent child around her.

He was always smiling; his deep eyes were full of tenderness.

Elvira couldn't figure out what he was thinking.

Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, she thought of him and was touched. For a long time, no one had treated her so warmly.

Ever since her mom passed away, her world had been cold and loveless. No one cared about her.

Her stepmother Colette always shouted at her. All she and her father thought about all day was how to marry her off and make a fortune from it.

Cedric Tao, her half-brother, was only 13 years old, but he bullied her as well.

Her father, Harlow Tao was having a business crisis. His company was going out of business. Under such circumstances, his selfishness got the better of him. To change the situation, he, along with Colette, planned to marry his daughter to someone rich and powerful.

And he stayed at home drinking nonstop.

Thinking of all this, Elvira closed her eyes slowly.

She decided to get her mind off it. It was too painful.

Yet, as soon as she shut her eyes, Nigel’s face came to her mind.

He stared at her, as if trying to see her through.

What kind of person is this man?

Does he really care about me?

she thought. Nonetheless, there was no answer.

For many things, there was no reason. It just happened.

Maybe her marriage was one of such things. Perhaps, she should let nature take its own course, and see how it went.

She was tired and closed her eyes again.

In the next bedroom, Nigel was also wide awake. Yet he was thinking of something else.

He stared at the wall, as if through the wall he could see her face.

    He was thinking of her.

He wanted to be at her side.

He wanted to hold her hand and tell her, "I’m here."

Why did he want to protect her so much?

Why was she so charming to him?

Even when she was right in front of him, he was thinking of her.

Who are you? he thought with a smile.

He had lost his heart to her the day he met her.

She was thin and petite, and fragile like porcelain. But her timidity, sensitivity and frailty attracted him.

The desire to protect her was so intense it was like fire blazing up in his heart.

Is it because she looks like her?

That girl was sensitive and vulnerable too. The thought of her brought a dull pain in his chest.

Overnight, everybody in the airline knew that the poor, ordinary Elvira had married someone rich and powerful.

"She is now with the famous air force Major General Nigel He. I wonder how she seduced him."

"She looks weak and simple. Who would have thought that she is a manipulative bitch?"

All kinds of harsh remarks filled the offices. Nigel's identity as the heir to the multinational economic and trading group The Hewin Consortium made the marriage even more shocking.

Jealousy was the scariest thing in the world.

    "Elvira!"

    Lorna called her.

"I heard that you married Nigel He. Is it true?"

Lorna asked with a fawning smile.

    "Yeah."

Elvira smiled wryly. By instinct, she wanted to deny it, but what was done was done. She was married to him now. She couldn't deny the truth.

Once Elvira admitted it, the expression on Lorna’s face changed subtly. She turned around and grabbed the coffee she had prepared earlier, and handed it to Elvira.

The world is made up of all kinds of people. Some are snobs. Elvira used to be a nobody, but now she was somebody.

A paper bag on her desk caught her eye. Elvira opened it. Inside was a box of sushi. There was a note on the box.

"Remember to have breakfast," it said.

    The signature was Husband,

    followed by a heart shape.

Elvira couldn’t help smiling. Her heart was filled with warmth and happiness.

    He spoils me, she thought.
