Nigel used to be close to Preston when they were kids.
As a little boy, he didn’t understand the feud between adults. Not long after his mom had died, his father married Sienna and asked him to call her "Mom."
Little Nigel thought he had only one mom and she had died of an illness.
It was a cruel fact to him, but he had to accept it.
But he didn’t understand why he had to call a strange woman "Mom."
He didn’t want to. Felix didn’t force him. It surprised him that his son had started to have his own ideas at such an early age. So he asked Nigel to call Sienna "Aunt" instead.
Nigel still remembered how Sienna’s mouth twitched in disgust when he had called her "Aunt Sienna" for the first time.
At that moment he realized that this woman was a villain who was very nice to him in his father’s presence but mistreated him behind his father’s back.
He had seen a lot of such mean women on TV.
After that he was always on his guard. But to Preston, who was three years younger than him, he was always protective.
Thinking that his little brother needed his protection, he took good care of him. So he had been protective ever since he was a little boy.
Things were like that until Nigel was in the fifth grade and Preston was in Grade Two.
One day, some big boys from a higher grade bullied Preston. When Nigel passed an alley, he saw some older boys, who were a head taller than Preston, pushing him against the wall, asking for protection money.
Nigel got furious. He rushed over and punched one of those bullies in the face. Then they surrounded him, but Nigel wasn’t scared.
He fought bravely. Preston regarded his older brother as his hero.
Things would have been different if it had remained that way.
Nigel was only a 5th-grade pupil after all. Soon he and Preston lost the fight. They got beaten up.
Ferguson, who had come to the school to pick them up, had been waiting by the car. After a long while, still not seeing them, he decided to look for them in the school. When he walked by the alley, he saw them. The two little boys had been knocked over to the ground, and the bullies were raining fists and kicks on them. Ferguson taught the bullies a lesson and took the brothers home.
When Felix heard about this, he praised Nigel for being a good brother and was glad that the boys were close to each other.
Nigel and Preston smiled at each other. Although they were covered with bruises, they were happy.
Nigel was happy that he had saved Preston. Preston was happy that he had a good brother.
After the fight, the two brothers became tighter. But Sienna couldn’t stand it.
She had a purpose when she married into this family.
At first, it was because she thought Felix could provide her with a comfortable life, the life she had always wanted.
However, after living in the He family for some time, she got greedy.
Meanwhile, she was worried that when she lost her looks, Felix would dump her. Then she would lose everything.
So she had started to plan for herself. Initially, she had gotten herself pregnant so that Felix could marry her.
Now, she wanted her son to replace Nigel and become the heir to Hewin Consortium.
She wanted the company to be hers.
She had always been holding a grudge against Nigel because he had refused to call her "Mom."
She had told Felix that Nigel was like another son to her, but she had never felt that way.
To get what she wanted, the malicious woman used the fight to drive a wedge between the two brothers.
Just when everyone thought the two brothers would become inseparable after the fight, they drifted apart.
Sienna told Preston that Nigel had helped him only because he wanted to get their father’s approval, so Felix would like him better and alienate himself from Preston.
She also claimed that Nigel was just pretending to care about Preston. Actually, he had never accepted them as family. He didn’t want them in his home. Sooner or later, he would throw them out.
She also made Preston believe that Nigel thought he had stolen his home and his father, so Nigel hated him.
Sienna had feigned a pitiful tone as she lied to Preston about everything. She made herself sound like a miserable woman.
The reason she was doing this was that she wanted her son hating Nigel. In nature, Preston was actually honest. His heart was in the right place. If he and Nigel were always so close, he wouldn’t compete against his older brother for the company.
Then she wouldn’t get anything. So, to get Hewin Consortium, she had turned her own son into one of her pawns.
Little Preston was too young to know the truth. He thought his mom should be right, that his mom wouldn’t harm him, and that a son should listen to his mom.
So he did. He remembered everything his mom said, and did as he was told. From that day on, everything Nigel did for him became hypocrisy.
Sienna had told him that Nigel was good to him only to get Felix's approval. In the end, he would kick him and his mom out of the home.
He couldn’t let his mom become homeless. Just like, Nigel became his enemy. For his mom and himself, he started to fight Nigel.
The innocent boy disappeared, destroyed by his own mom.
More than ten years passed. The gulp between the two brothers had widened. His hate for Nigel had grown.
He hated him the most when he saw how cold Nigel was to his mother.
Nigel had pondered over why Preston had turned against him all of a sudden. At first, he thought maybe Preston was just being willful.
Then, he sensed the hate Preston had for him.
He started to think that his younger brother was working with his mom to take Hewin Consortium away from him; they were after the family’s wealth.
As much as he hated Sienna, he had never been angry at Preston before.
At that moment, however, he realized that both mother and son had come to this family with a purpose.
Nigel wasn’t good at disguise. He always showed his emotion on his face.
Most of the time, he just ignored Sienna and Preston. Then he simply moved out of the home.
In fact, he really had never wanted the company.
And everybody could see that.
So, in the eyes of the outsiders, Preston became undoubtedly the heir. They all began to kiss up to him and slight Nigel.
