To Preston, Nigel’s lack of interest in the company was just a pretense.
He was sure that Nigel had hidden his ambition and was waiting for a chance to take him down.
Thinking of this, Preston resolved to strengthen his force and do a better job in running the company. If he was the best in the job, then no one would be able to take the company away from him.
Felix’s favor to him was obvious. On the other hand, Nigel was always the rebellious son. He had embarrassed their father in public more than once. So Preston assumed that Felix didn’t like Nigel much.
"It’s time to introduce your wife to everyone,"
Randal said slowly.
His white beard moved as he spoke. Somehow, it made Elvira feel he was amiable.
She had liked the old man since the first day she had met him.
Nigel slid his arm around her and announced proudly, "This is my wife, Elvira Tao."
He had a smug expression on his face when he said that, but his tone was cold as usual.
His introduction was way too short. Since everybody had already known she was his wife, the introduction was actually meaningless.
"Everybody, sit down,"
Randal said resignedly, deciding to eat first. Sometimes, he didn’t know what to do with his first grandson.
"Why isn’t Madeline here?"
Felix asked Preston in a feigned angry tone.
Noticing that his younger daughter-in-law hadn’t shown up yet, he was worried that Randal would be mad. So he had asked Preston before Randal did in order that Randal couldn’t reprimand Preston and Madeline.
This was the first time Nigel had brought his wife home. But as his sister-in-law, Madeline Qiao didn’t make his appearance. This was disrespectful, not only to Nigel, but also to Randal and the entire family.
It was certain Randal would be displeased.
"Father, Madeline has been too busy today. She couldn’t make the time,’
Preston replied. He understood what Felix meant.
"No matter how busy she is, she should have come to see Nigel and Elvira,"
Randal declared, furrowing his eyebrows. Anger was plain in his face.
"Yes, Grandpa. What Madeline did is wrong. She and I will visit Nigel and Elvira and apologize to them in person next time,"
Preston said sincerely as he nodded to Randal.
When he said "visit," he turned to Nigel, giving him a sinister look and a weird smile.
It angered Nigel.
Visit?
Don’t. He only means to destroy our happiness.
However, if Preston dared to do anything to ruin their life, Nigel wouldn’t be easy on him.
"What do you do, Elv?"
Sienna asked Elvira, trying to change the subject.
Even though she was asking her a question, she didn’t look at Elvira. Actually, she had never given her as much as a look since the moment Elvira walked into this house.
To her, Elvira was unworthy. She wouldn’t have spoken to the girl if Randal and Felix weren’t there.
"She is a flight attendant,"
Nigel said coldly as he picked up some food. He didn’t even look up, as if he were talking to the food.
In his opinion, Sienna was evil; she didn’t deserve to speak to Elvira.
His rude attitude made Sienna’s blood boil.
"Madeline is very young, but she is already the general manager of Qiao Group.
Elv, you seem her age. But don’t worry. I believe one day, you’ll be just as successful as she is."
Sienna acted concerned about Elvira, but everyone could tell that she was only bragging about her younger daughter-in-law.
Nigel’s face darkened when he heard that. But he didn’t flare up.
Talking to his wife like that, Sienna had become more and more insufferable to him.
"Thank you. Actually I’ve been persuading her to quit. I don’t want her to work so hard. I only want her to stay at home and have fun."
Nigel looked at Elvira firmly, as if he was encouraging her with the look in his eyes.
Sienna was trying to humiliate Elvira. But Elvira didn’t realize it. She thought the woman was really friendly.
Nigel's words confused Elvira. She blinked and wondered inwardly, When did he persuade me to quit? I like being a flight attendant. Why does he think he can make me quit?
She didn’t want to be a housewife, even though she didn’t need to do anything at home. She didn’t even have to cook. It was always Nigel who cooked.
He really wasn’t like the pampered son of a rich family at all when he was with her. Thinking of this, she couldn’t help smiling.
Nigel was surprised to see her smiling in front of so many people.
He smiled too, staring at her affectionately.
Randal rarely saw Nigel smile. Out of curiosity, he followed Nigel's gaze. When he saw Elvira’s face, he understood what had caused the change of Nigel’s expressions.
Nigel had been indifferent to almost everything. Now finally, he had opened his heart to someone.
This girl will be the one who melts his heart.
Randal smiled when he thought of this.
The others noticed Nigel's unusual expression too. They exchanged surprised glances.
Among them, Preston was the most surprised.
The tenderness in Nigel’s face reminded him of their childhood, when they had been very close.
Back then, Nigel had always looked at him like that. To anybody else, he was cold as ice, but he would smile at him. Only him.
Right now, however, they were more like enemies than brothers.
Suddenly, Preston felt dejected, as if something in his heart was missing. But that feeling passed as quickly as it came.
He had hated Nigel for almost 20 years. He couldn’t give up now. He had to earn a position for him and his mom in this family.
He took a deep breath to calm down, and then once again, the sharp, fierce look was back in his eyes.
Why can Nigel live the life he wants? Why can he have love while I had to marry someone for the sake of business?
He didn’t love Madeline at all.
