Aaron walked out of his office to ask Callum to attend the meeting at 3 p.m. sharp. On his way back to his office, he passed Alyssa’s desk. She was working attentively. After a moment of consideration, he walked up to her.
This was the first time he paid attention to her desk. It was distinct from other employees’. It looked like her own home.
There were boat-fruited sterculia seeds, dried wild chrysanthemums, roses, and sliced lemon, which she used to make tea. She also shared them with her coworkers.
On a corner stood a pot of succulent, a Totoro-shaped mug and a bottle of sweets. All kinds of pens filled the penholder on her desk. One had only to look at the desk to know that its owner was upbeat and vigorous.
When the other employees saw Aaron approaching Alyssa’s desk, they all raised their heads, wondering. Alyssa, though, was still engrossed in work, detecting nothing unusual.
She was doing a financial statement. Aaron stood behind her and said, "Alyssa.”
Startled, she turned around abruptly, her eyes widened, like a spooked cat.
She stood up reflexively and looked at him. His face was cold as ever. "B-boss,” she called.
A hush fell in the office. All eyes were on them. Everyone stopped working to see what was going on. Aaron swept across the office. All the other employees lowered their heads to resume their work, but they kept their ears pricked up to listen to what the two were about to say.
"Did you put those things on my desk?” Aaron asked when no one was looking at them.
"Yes,” Alyssa answered honestly.
"Who told you that you were allowed to switch my coffee?”
He sounded a little upset. Alyssa became nervous. She was also confused.
I was trying to help him get better. Shouldn’t he be thanking me instead of blaming me?
"Um, coffee would only make your condition worse,” she explained quietly.
But Aaron didn’t seem to appreciate her concern. "Do your job and stop trying to be a smartass,” he said nonchalantly.
At this point, Pamela walked over to them with a file in her hand. She saw Aaron speaking to Alyssa, but the conversation didn’t seem to be work-related, and the other employees were all secretly peeking at them. Pamela held her head high, walked closer to them and said, "Aaron.”
"What is it?” Aaron asked.
"I need to discuss the plan about the land in the south of the city,” Pamela said.
Aaron went back to his office. Pamela followed after him after giving Alyssa a lingering look. Alyssa met her eyes and smiled. Pamela returned her smile. There’s something special about this new secretary, she thought.
"Alyssa, what's going on?
What did Boss say to you?”
"Right.
Tell us, what did you do?”
After her boss left, her coworkers all swarmed over to her desk curiously, asking for information. Sitting in her chair, Alyssa replied sadly, "I got on Boss’ nerves. I meant to kiss up to him, but I screwed up.”
"Our boss is renowned for being just. How could you even think of fawning over him?” one of her coworkers observed.
Alyssa pursed her lips in disappointment. This was not what she had expected. All she did was make him some tea and bring him some medicine. Why make a big deal out of it?
Besides, she meant well.
However, she ended up getting blamed.
He was so unapproachable and unfeeling, she realized.
Luckily, she hadn’t made any serious mistakes so far. Otherwise, she might have been canned a long time ago.
However, who would have thought that Alyssa, who had made their boss angry today, would some day become the wife of their boss?
