Eventually Blair changed nothing. It was understandable. She was just a grass roots employee. How could she hope to change the top executives’ decision?
"Alyssa, could you come here for a minute?"
Aaron suddenly said as she was focused on her work.
When she walked in his office, Aaron handed her a signed file and said, "Deliver this to the manager of the sales department please."
She was taken aback when she heard his voice. It used to be deep and magnetic, but now it was hoarse. Speaking seemed difficult to him.
Alyssa raised her head to look at him when she extended her hand to take the file. As usual, he was wearing a suit, his hair carefully arranged. But he looked pale and haggard; his eyes were ringed.
After delivering the file, she walked back to her desk. When she glimpsed the bottle of boat-fruited sterculia seeds on her desk, she fell into a daze.
Aaron took a nap at noon in the lounge. When he woke up, he felt dizzy and tired, his throat sore and hoarse.
He stepped out of the lounge, sat in his chair and let out a long sigh.
He used to be in the special forces. With a strong physique, he scarcely got sick. He didn’t know what went wrong this time. Rubbing his throbbing temples, he took the bottle on the table and sipped some water.
But the water tasted strange. He looked inside the bottle and saw some dates-like things floating there. That must be why the water tasted so sweet. He didn’t like it. Frowning, he tried again. This time, it seemed better.
When he put the bottle down, he noticed that there was a bottle of medicine on the table too. He picked it up to look at the package, and it said Watermelon Frost Lozenge. He had never taken such tablets, so, curiously, he unscrewed the cap of the bottle and looked inside. To his surprise, the bottle had been cut in half, and the other half was missing.
There was only one person who could have done this.
He leaned back in his chair, picked up the water bottle and drank some more of the fluid made from those strange-looking things. At this moment, he was moved.
When Aaron was five, his father died in the battlefield. Then his mother remarried and left the house. He was brought up by his grandfather. Raised in a military family, he had been approachable since he was a little boy. After losing his parents, he became icy and unfeeling. There had never been a woman close to him in his whole life.
Thus, no woman had done this for him before. If this was Alyssa’s doing, it was just exactly what Aaron hoped for right now.
Aaron had been observing her quietly ever since he found out about her relationship with Basil.
She was so frank even her fawning seemed adorable to him. He had met all kinds of women in business; the aloof ones, the flirtatious ones, the innocent ones. She was the kind that was not innocent, but never pretended to be otherwise. This was something new to him, and he didn’t know how to deal with her.
She was diligent and tactful at work. He didn’t find any faults in her job. How could he dismiss her without a reason?
He never allowed his emotions or private affairs affect his work. In his company, capable employees were much valued. And Alyssa was undoubtedly capable.
Aaron took a pastille from the bottle and put it in his mouth. It felt cool, and the soreness of his throat was soon alleviated. And his head didn’t ache that much. It had been a long time since the last time someone took care of him like this.
Much as he was a tough guy, when he saw this common medicine on his desk, he still felt a wave of warmth surging through his heart. Deep down, he desired care.
If one lived in dark too long, he would crave light, very much.
