Summer came earlier than other cities in City A.

The weather in City A was steaming hot even in late May.

In the midnight, Nell Su just got off work. She took the take away back from her small room which costed Nell 120 dollars a month. Nell lived in the slum of City A.

“Why don’t you take something good back home? I can’t stand with eating leftovers of others every day!” Her stepmother, Mary Fong, opened the to-go box and complained with a frown. She could not bear with eating those remaining food anymore.

Nell did not respond her and took the fish-flavored pork with a poker face. Then She answered, “I can only wrap the food up after all the guests have finished their dishes when the canteen is nearly closed. So, I can’t take back an intact dish.”

“All right! Forget about that. I can’t take it anymore. You are good for nothing! I must have done something wrong in my past life to have you, this loser in my home. Why did I take you back and raise you up?” Mary Fong put down her chopsticks, stood up and walked to the small room covered by a rag. Out of sudden, something slipped her mind, she said, “Your little sister called today. You find a way to send her fifty thousand dollars!”

“What? fifty thousand dollars?” Nell opened her jaws and stared at Mary with her eyes wide open. Obviously, she was freak out.

“Yes, she is about to take part in a competition. She needs some good looking clothes and also some reference books...” Mary said rolling her eyes, taking Nell’s favor for granted.

“Mother, you know the conditions we are under now… That is no way I can get so much money for her…”

“It is too much for you? Is fifty thousand dollars too much for you? Just go and sort this out! I have raised you for so many years without asking you to pay me back. The money we spent on you was far more than fifty thousand dollars.” Mary yelled at Nell before she completed her sentence.

Her stepfather Gary abandoned the family with a huge debt behind. Mary sold their house quickly and took all the money, not to repay Gary’s debt, but to do something else. In order to repay the debt and support the whole family, Nell had to do two jobs.

“Bang”

The rotten door was broken by a man.

Mary and Nell looked back. There were few men in black standing at the door, blocking the whole narrow corridor.

Out of rage, Nell asked, “Who are you?”

The leader of the men waved his hand and ordered his fellows, “Take Mary Fong away.”

Mary screamed and ran back to the house. “What are you doing? What do you want to do?”

“Gary owed us money. You are his wife. You need to pay the money for him for sure.” The men in black said ruthlessly.

Mary cried out loud at that time. She said “Nell, you have to help your mother. I don’t want to go with them. I still need to take care of your little sister. You don’t want your sister become an orphan when she comes home, right? We have raised you for so many years. Shouldn’t you repay us?”

She felt dizzy about the situation. She slightly rubbed between her eyebrows and asked calmly, “Who are you? My father has gone and we don’t have the money to pay you.”

“Take her away.” The black man did not bother to explain any further. He detained Mary Fong by force.

“Nell, help me, help your mom!” Mary turned back and screamed, seeking for help.

“Wait for a second.” Nell asked them to stop. “Let my mother go. I will go with you instead.”

The man looked at Mary, then turned to Nell Su again. Mary told the man “Yes, yes, yes. Take her instead. She is the daughter of family Su. Let her pay you the money back.”

There was no other way. Nell understood and lowered her head.

Though she did not know what to do but she understand that it was compulsory to return the money back if you borrow it. Furthermore, she was the adopted daughter of family Su that she should repay family Su…

Moreover, in the present situation, she could not let her mother go with these gangsters. If anything happened to her mother who was unable to work or suffer, she would not forgive herself .

The black man did not object to the suggestion, so long as she was a family member of Su. It looked all the same to those gangsters. So, the leader order in a flat tone: “Take this woman away.”

The two men standing behind him released Mary and grabbed Nell Su’s arm instead.

Nell understood that she should not complain or struggle in this situation, but she felt uncomfortable about the way they detained her. So she said with a frown, “I have promised you to go with you. I won’t run. You don’t need to grab me like this.”

The two men standing beside Nell looked at their leader. The leader nodded. Then they loosened their hands from Nell’s arms.

Being released, Mary felt relieved and happy that she can get away with this trouble, thinking Nell was a fool who was willing to be caught.

Obviously, she did not feel sorry for or appreciate what Nell Su had done for her. She always believed that Nell, the baby abandoned on the street, should take care of her mother by all means. Otherwise family Su should not have raised her up.

When Mary was thinking and justifying her action, her “daughter” Nell Su had already been taken away from her home.

Nell did not expect anything from this family and was used to this coldness. Still when she walked out the front door, she turned back and told Mary Fong: “Mother, you and sister don’t have to worry. I will be back soon.”

“What? Alright, you just go with them. I don’t want to see these terrifying guys.” Mary looked up and found that those gangsters were still around, so she stepped back and urged them to leave.

On the hustling streets, there were different kinds of skyscrapers standing along the way. But the most eye-catching one was the Tian Cheng Group building. Judging from the luxury and the delicacy of the building, it attracted most people’s eyes.

But now for Nell Su, even the most eye-catching thing would lose its attractiveness. Now she was the person in huge debt and no one on earth would like her.

Nell was led by the gangster leader to an office with a name plate of Financial Controller on the door. When she looked around, planning how to escape from any potential danger, the cold and reticent man standing beside her finally opened his mouth and said. “Director, she is here.”

The man who was busy at his work raised his head and pulled down his glasses from his nose. He looked Nell up and down. Then he calmly said: “Alright, she looks rather good. Take her to be the host of the chartered room in KTV.” Then he continued to do his works and left them there.

After hearing it, Nell had a bad feeling about it and was panic. Even if she had not heard of this job position before, she knew that it was not an ordinary and proper job. Therefore, she rejected immediately, “I am able to pay the debts.”

For a couple of minutes, the busy man behind the working desk raised his head again and said, “what are you able to do? The little amount of salary you earn can only save your family’s life, but nothing for your debt.”

Nell opened her mouth, attempting to respond, the man told her frankly, “If you refuse the job, your whole family will do it with you.”

After listening to the threatening words from the decent man behind the desk, Nell did not continue to speak. She was speechless, understanding that he was serious. She had to accept the job.

She clenched her fists and answered them with cold eyes, “Alright I will go. Do not harm my family.”
