Oh, I hope some day
I'll make it out of here
Even if it takes all night or
a hundred years
Need a place to hide, but
I can't find one near
Wanna feel alive, outside
I can't fight my fear
Taahir frowned and asked, "Tahseen, tell me what's wrong."
"I don't like Auntie Rosa," his son replied directly.
He understood his son's thoughts immediately.
"You don't want me to marry her?"
The boy was silent so Taahir took that as a yes.
"Why don't you like her?" Taahir continued his line of questioning, "She has been extremely nice to you, hasn't she?"
One of the reasons Taahir agreed to the marriage was because he had seen how good Rosa treated Tahseen. He didn't mind who he married but if he had to marry one, he might as well find one that could be a good stepmother to Tahseen.
Rosa was the best candidate because his whole family approved of her and she was kind to Tahseen.
Therefore, it came as a surprise for his son to reveal that he didn't like his fiancé.
"She's nice to me because I'm your son. I'm just a tool for her to get to you."
Taahir's face dropped. "That's not a nice thing to say."
"The truth is never good on the ears!" Tahseen said with wisdom beyond his years, "Why do you care? You've never asked for my opinion about who you should marry anyway. I'm just the extra baggage."
Tahseen hopped off the counter and stalked off in an angry fit.
"Stand right there!" Taahir ordered sternly, "Tahseen, who taught you to speak like this to your own father? Where are your manners?"
Tahseen was already upset, being lectured only made him more morose. He turned around obstinately, his eyes swirling with sadness and dissatisfaction.
Taahir was stunned...
When he came to, Tahseen was already gone.
Taahir ran out to chase after his son. He caught up to him at the restaurant's entrance. He turned Tahseen around and was surprised to see tears rolling in his son's eyes.
Tahseen had always been a quiet child. He could spend a whole afternoon in silence in the company of a good book.
He was in all meanings of the word, a model child. He was not given to childish fits and outbursts.
His behavior today was definitely out of the ordinary. This was also the first time Taahir saw his son so upset.
When he divorced Tahera, Tahseen was only one-year-old. The mother wasn't a part of the boy's life for the past three years.
Taahir thought this meant that Tahseen had gotten used to being raised in Tahera's absence, but he didn't realize his son had merely been stuffing his emotions deep down.
Looking at his son, Taahir had no appetite to continue the dinner anymore.
After a brief phone call to his mom, he brought Tahseen home. In the car, Tahseen kept his eyes on the scenery outside the window. His small figure spoke of loneliness and forlornness.
Taahir sat beside him silently. When they passed the hospital, his thoughts went to Tahera.
He wondered if she had woken up. Taahir couldn't help but be reminded of her current situation. He was sure Tahseen wouldn't bear to see his mother like that.
Taahir decided to temporarily not let both of them meet to spare Tahseen the sadness...
When they arrived at Purple Jade Villa, their home, Tahseen was already asleep.
Taahir was carrying his son into their living room when his cellphone rang.
"Sir, please let me carry the young sir," their maid, Mrs. Reema said.
After gingerly passing Tahseen over to her, Taahir pulled out his phone. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" He began and was quick to realize it was from the hospital.
"Is this Mr. Taahir Rahman? This is from City Hospital."
"Yes, Taahir speaking. How can I help you?" Taahir enquired although he was certain it had everything to do with Tahera.
"Mr. Rahman, I'm sorry to inform you but the patient you sent over today suddenly disappeared. We believe that she left the hospital of her own accord! However, her body is still recovering so she shouldn't have left. Can you please contact her and get her back to the hospital?"
Taahir was right that it had to do with Tahera but even he couldn't have predicted the woman would be crazy enough to leave the hospital against the doctor's advice!
Tahera was involved in a car accident. Her injury wasn't that serious but the doctor did say it was required for her to stay in the hospital for observation for at least a few days.
Who would have thought she would sneak out after she regained consciousness...
The nurse also found 30000 BDT on Tahera's bedside table after she left. When she woke up, the nurse handed her the money, telling her it was from Taahir. When she snuck out, she left it behind, an obvious rejection of his kindness.
This meant that she had no money and her body was still in a stage of convalesce. Taahir couldn't understand why she would leave just like that.
Doesn't she care about her own health? Taahir was a bit inflamed by her denseness but he still hopped into his car to find her.
It was not that he was worried about her but, at the end of the day, she was still Tahseen's mother. He couldn't just leave her to her own devices for Tahseen's sake.
While Taahir was out around the city looking for her, Tahera was at the police station. She was there to make a police report!
With a bandaged head, bruised face, pallid skin and feeble body, the police thought she was there to report a physical assault.
However, it turned out she wanted to report a car accident that happened six years ago.
"Ms. Tahera, let me get this straight. You mean to say the car accident that happened to you six years ago was a premeditated murder attempt?" the police asked in shock.
Tahera nodded, her eyes held firm, adding, "That's correct! Six years ago, I rushed back from overseas because my father had fallen seriously ill. Someone had made an attempt on my life and faked it as a vehicular accident. Thankfully, I didn't die, I only lost my memory. Today, I got into another accident and everything came back to me."
"How can you be so sure that it was premeditated?"
"I remember noticing that car had been following me since I landed at the airport. He was waiting for me!"
The police turned serious and asked, "Can you remember anything else?"
"I remember the last two digits of the car plates were 53, and it was a black SUV."
The police responded with a hint of disbelief, "But Ms. Tahera, this was six years ago and you yourself said you've suffered from temporary amnesia, so how can you be certain the things you've remembered are in fact correct?"
Tahera replied softly, "Because the man wanted to kill me, how can one possibly mistake the details of his or her killer? Furthermore, even during my amnesia, my retentive memory was perfectly fine."
The police were quick to believe her. This was because he had pulled Tahera's records and realized she was a top student from Harvard University, one of the top universities in the world.
"Ms. Tahera, do you have any suspects in mind or have you wronged someone in the past?"
"The only suspects are my stepmother and her daughter. After my father passed away, they were quick to cut me out of his will. Everything fell to the mother-daughter pair even though I'm my father's only biological heir!"
Animosity colored Tahera's eyes when she spat out those words. Her parents also divorced when she was young. She grew up overseas with her mom.
After her father remarried, She would spend some time in the country with her father annually. She got on well with her stepmother and sister. They were always kind and nice to her.
Tahera treated them as her extended families but who knew the pair had a hidden motive all along.
When her father was on his death bed, they were afraid Tahera would lay claim to a majority of his estate so their vicious nature finally reared its ugly head.
It was truly a miracle that the car crash didn't take Tahera's life, only her memory.
Her father, before he passed away – perhaps finally realizing his new wife's mal-intention – contacted Mr. Alim Rahman and requested that Tahera be married into the Rahman Family.
Hence, after he died, Tahera who had lost her memory became Taahir's wife. Following a series of ups and downs, she finally decided for a divorce and left the Rahman Family.
Her divorce was the talk of the town so it was impossible for her stepmother to not hear about it. However, in the past three years, she had never once offered help. In fact, Tahera did try approaching her for help when she was almost homeless but her stepmother turned her away.
The change in their behavior before and after her accident was so drastic that it was hard to believe the mother-daughter pair had nothing to do with Tahera's downfall.
In any case, she was sure her stepmother and sister were the perpetrators behind her so-called accident! Now that she thought about it, her father's death was quite suspicious as well.
Her father wasn't even a casual drinker so how could he have suddenly fallen down the stairs in a drunken stupor?
Tahera swore to get to the bottom of the truth and make Ruma and her daughter Riya pay for what they did!
When she left the police station, the sun had long since set. Tahera didn't return to the hospital but headed straight home.
Her divorce to Taahir left her penniless. It was her uncle who took her in.
Rahim Hussain was her father's little brother, and used to work in the Hussain Family's hotelier business. His honesty and lack of business acumen though prevented him from achieving professional greatness.
Her stepmother and sister took complete hold over her father's estate after he passed away, leaving her uncle and his only son with nothing. In a way, Tahera and her uncle's family found themselves landing in the same boat. However, her kind uncle insisted on taking Tahera into his care. He treated her like his own daughter.
This debt of gratitude, Tahera would continue to repay it for the rest of her life.
After navigating a series of increasingly dirty alleyways, Tahera found herself in a decrepit residential area. She looked around vacantly.
It would not be an exaggeration to call the place a slum. Grimy, smelly, and disorderly were fitting descriptions.
Tahera never knew that she would end up in a place like this.
Before her memory loss, she lived a life of ease. Even without her father's heritage, she would have survived quite well with her own talent and capability.
In the game of life, she once stood tall and proud. But then, fate struck her down. A car accident sent her down a slippery slope which brought her, eventually, to this slum.
Her fate was like the concubines in Ancient Bangladeshi dramas; favored one moment, abandoned the next. It was not hard to see why she was bitter about it.
However, with the return of her memory, she was going to reclaim everything that she had lost!
With her talent and hard work, she believed that she would soon see the back of this place. Her life would no longer be in other's hands!
Tahera stopped in front of an old but sturdy wooden door and knocked lightly.
The door opened swiftly to reveal a lanky young man. He asked bewilderedly, "Sis, what happened to you? Why are you wounded all over?"
Tahera replied calmly, "It's nothing serious. I got into a little car accident."
"Tahera, is that you? How serious was the accident, did you go to hospital, which part of your body was injured?" Rahim Hussain, with a head of grey hair, rushed over to fuss over Tahera before adding, "Are you still in pain? Who's the driver that hit you‽"
"Sis, are you badly injured? Do you need any help?"
Taking in her uncle and cousin's worried and caring questions, Tahera's heart was immediately warmed.
