Suddenly!
There was an abrupt and clear sound coming from behind. Something dropped on the ground.
Edward was interrupted by it. He turned around and saw Hailey standing at the door of the living room, dumbfounded. Around her feet scattered some fruits.
“Hailey, is everything okay?” Rachael asked carefully at once before she stood up and walked to her.
Hailey collected herself immediately and replied with her usual voice, “Oh, yes. Everything is okay. I was just being careless.” She then bent down and picked up those fruits. There was a hint of worry in her eyes as she lowered her head.
After the dinner was over, Rachael was very reluctant to let Hailey stay here. However, Hailey still insisted not to leave with her. Rachael had nothing to do. Out of no choice, she left the house alone.
Hailey saw her off at the front door.
After everything was done, she came back. Wiping her sweat on the forehead, she walked into the living room while sighing, “I did not know Rachael likes red bean cookies so much.”
Louis took a look at her and said in a seemingly casual tone, “Mr. Zhang likes red bean cookies too.”
Hailey was a little bit surprised. “Edward like them too? But he even did not have a taste!”
Louis did not say anything. Instead, he just walked away to take care of his work.
Hailey pursed her lips. Then she went to the kitchen and made a cup of warm tea before she brought the tea upstairs.
Standing outside the study, she knocked at the door. “Edward? Are you in there? May I come in?” she asked softly.
“Yes.” A deep voice of a man came out.
Edward was dealing with his work in the study. Seeing Hailey come in, he put the pen down on the table and leaned back in his chair. He raised his chin towards her, indicating her to sit down.
“What’s the matter?” he asked.
Hailey placed the cup of warm tea on the desk. She paused for a few seconds before she asked, “I heard you say that you will go to America a few days later. Are you going there for work?”
Edward took a look at her. “Yes. There is something wrong with a film the company invested in. I need to go there to deal with it.” He did not intend to hide anything from her.
“Do you have to deal with it by yourself?” Hailey asked again as she wrinkled her eyebrows. “I didn’t mean that you can’t go there. It’s just the person behind who killed my father is still on the run. I’m afraid he won’t stop trying to kill you. It’s not that safe in America either with such a complicated social environment. I think you will be safer staying here. My father has gone. I don’t want anything unexpected happening to you.”
Hailey remembered that in the past life, Edward went to America at this time. As a result, he was injured by the dynamite on the set and almost died. Later, he spent one whole month in the hospital before he came back. For the following half year, he had been staying at home to adjust his body before he finally recovered. But at that time, Hailey did not care about him at all. Instead, she took pleasure in his misfortune. She even secretly wished him were dead!
There was nothing but regret in Hailey’s mind whenever she recalled her very wrong behavior.
“You don’t hate me?” Edward asked in surprise. This was the first time he had heard that she talked about her father’s death so peacefully. He thought she never changed her mind and was still blaming him for her father’s death. Although she had been behaving nicely to him recently, he did not think that she already forgave him.
But now, he felt that she really did not hate him like before anymore.
Hailey smiled bitterly in response. “It would not make any difference even if I kept hating you all the time. My father has already gone. He will never come back anyway.”
Hailey raised her head and held her tears back. “I was being too naive to blame you for everything. I know I was stupid to act horribly in the past. Now I understand that it was my father’s duty to protect you. He chose to protect you. You did not force him. The one I should hate is the person behind instead of you!”
How she wished she could be reborn and come back to the time a few months earlier. That way, she would do whatever she could to stop them from going out!
She was also extremely regretful that she did not study hard in order to anger Edward. As a result, she did badly in the college entrance examination. Later, she went to an ordinary university in another province where she met Philip Lin - the bastard. Philip courted her tactically and made her fall in love with him. At the same time, Edward told her that he had already known who was the murderer. However, Hailey was seized by the certainty that it was Edward who caused her father’s death. So she just put a deaf ear to Edward’s information and did not dig out the killer.
That was why she had no idea about who might be the murderer in this new life.
She just could not hold her urge to slap herself in the face whenever she thought about it. If she paid a little more attention to Edward’s words in her past life, she would know who caused all this tragedy now!
Edward gave her a meaningful look. “You can rest assured. Your father will not die in vain. Everyone involved in it will pay for that.”
“You must stay alive! If there is something terrible happening to you, I really have no idea how I am supposed to live without you. I would befall alone again,” Hailey prayed to him as she stretched out her hand and held his big hand.
There was a hint of complicated feelings in Edward’s heart. After a long time, he curved his lips upwards, forming a charming smile. He then reached out and rubbed her hair gently. “Okay, I will.”
The next day, Hailey got up at dawn and jogged around the house for several rounds before she practiced some self-defense skills.
In the past life, Edward hired a master in this respect to teach her self-defense skills. However, practicing those skills was a start-and-stop-and-start-again affair for her. She did not learn it by heart at that time. After she went to that bad university, she began to practice those skills in order to fight against others.
She learned nothing good about what a lady should learn in the past life, which brought shame to Edward. Instead, she became an expert on fighting, cycle racing, etc.
There was too much thing she was regret for in the past life.
This time, Hailey had made up her mind that she would not disgrace upon Edward at least, if she could not bring honor to him. There were many things she should learn to do.
Hailey was aware that all those people working in the house loved and supported Edward. They would like or dislike her when she treated Edward nice or terribly. Doris was an excellent example. Her attitude towards Hailey changed a lot because she made Edward breakfast several times. Doris had been treated Hailey politely in the past, but she had not liked her very much. But now, she seemed to really start liking Hailey.
Edward finished his breakfast before he went out of the house. When he was about to get on the car, Hailey hurriedly ran out and caught up with him.
She tucked a bag into his arms and said, “Edward, this is for you.”
“What is it?” Edward was confused.
A bright smile crept onto Hailey’s lips. “You will know it when you open it later. All right. It’s time for you to go! Take care!”
Edward looked at her with a meaningful smile before he took the box and got inside the car.
The car started and drove away. Sitting in the car, Edward unwrapped the bag. There were two small boxes inside it. One was full of red bean cookies with cute shapes. In the other one lay a talisman.
Edward blinked his clear eyes. He took the talisman and rubbed it gently with his fingers. Then he raised his head and saw from the rearview mirror that a girl was waving her arm to say goodbye.
He could not help chuckling.
