The slightest kindness a person showed Elvira, she would remember forever. She thought she was too soft-hearted.
Even though the person was mean to her for the most of the time, she wouldn’t be able to hate him.
It was kind of silly.
Let’s say a person was usually nice to his friend. Then one day he did something that his friend disliked. Then instantly, all his kindness was forgotten and he became a bad person to his friend.
This was true to most people.
Yet, Elvira was the opposite.
Was she too soft-hearted?
Or maybe she was just a moron.
She smiled bitterly.
Nigel looked at her. He knew she was feeling bad, but he pretended to be calm, because he didn’t know how to comfort her. He only sat beside her quietly.
After Elvira and Nigel had left, Harlow closed the door. Colette dashed towards the gifts Nigel had brought them. Each of the gifts looked fancy. There was no doubt that Nigel was a rich guy.
She turned to the door and had an idea. There was a cunning look in her eyes.
"We should start preparing for the party,"
she said to Harlow. Since she had missed the opportunity to get a big betrothal gift of money, she was determined to use the party to get as many benefits as possible.
Harlow stood by the window for a while before he went upstairs again, as if Elvira had never been there.
Back home, Elvira walked into the bathroom to have a shower. As he heard the splash of water, Nigel turned to looked at the bathroom. He could see the reflection of her figure on the door. His body went stiff. Something inside him had been stirred. Subconsciously, he started moving towards the bathroom.
Water ran from the shower head, streaming down from her head. The bathroom was filled with steam.
Reflecting on her life, she found it meaningless. Nothing mattered anymore.
She felt like an empty shell.
Nigel paused at the door. His chest heaved as he looked at her shadow. Clenching his fists, he suddenly turned around and walked away.
A while later, Elvira stepped out of the bathroom, listlessly. She didn’t notice that Nigel wasn’t in the bedroom. Neither did she care where he was.
Lying in bed, she stared at the ceiling. She tossed and turned and put her pillow here and there, but sleep wouldn’t come.
As time ticked away, it was 3 a.m. already. Elvira looked out the window restlessly.
At around 8 a.m., finally sleep took her.
When the servants got up and started cleaning, they found that Nigel had crashed on the couch.
The birds were chirping outside. A ray of sunshine danced on his face naughtily. The glare made him frown and woke him up.
He stretched his body and looked towards the bedroom upstairs, assuming that Elvira was still sleeping.
Last night, he had been so aroused he had chosen to stay away from her. So he had slept downstairs on the couch in the living room instead of in the next bedroom.
Although he was strong in self-control, he found her irresistible.
It was already 1:30 p.m. when Elvira arrived at the offices of the airline. She looked for Lorna as soon as she got there, but Lorna was nowhere to be seen. Elvira panicked.
The flight was at 2 p.m. But right now, she was the only one in the office.
"You’re here. Why didn’t you have more rest at home?"
Just as Elvira was wondering what to do, Bernice appeared, pulling her suitcase. It seems that she was ready to board the plane.
"I...I..." Elvira thought Bernice was being sarcastic. She bowed her head and didn’t know how to respond.
"It’s okay. I have granted your day off today. Don’t worry about it,"
Bernice said with a big smile on her face, her eyes narrowed into two thin lines. She even patted Elvira on the shoulder to soothe her.
Elvira raised her head to look at her in surprise. What's going on?
Since when had Bernice been so gentle?
Everyone in the airline knew that Bernice was harsh and strict.
Bernice noticed the expression on Elvira’s face. She flashed a meaningful snicker, which was quickly replaced by a warm, friendly smile. Then she said something to Elvira with concern and got on the plane.
Elvira left, just as she was told. Outside, the sun was glaring. She sat on a bench.
People around her were busy heading for different destinations. She, however, seemed to be the only one that didn’t know where to go.
Sitting there, she looked at the sun, at the buildings, at the crowd, and then at the grass on the ground.
The universe was so enormous, yet she belonged nowhere.
Just then, her phone rang, bringing her back from her thoughts. It was an unknown number.
"Elvira, can you do me a favor?"
came a man's magnetic voice as soon as she answered the phone.
"Who is this?"
she asked, confused.
"I’m Ethan Qin,"
the man said. Elvira remembered who he was.
He was her classmate back in college. And he had chased her. Elvira had liked him too.
He was the most handsome man in Electronic Information Engineering Department.
With a height of more than 1.8 m, a handsome face, and an enchanting smile, he had been Elvira's prince charming.
His hair had been dyed dark red. His skin was even whiter than girls’.
Elvira smiled at the memories.
People could see his clean, white teeth when he smiled. His dimples were so cute she wanted to poke them.
Most importantly, he was not only handsome but also smart and hard-working.
He had always gotten the highest marks in the department.
He enjoyed sports and was good at basketball. What fascinated Elvira most was that he loved reading. Few boys read nowadays, and half the ones who did were gay.
Every time Elvira met Ethan’s limpid eyes,
she was engrossed and her heart raced.
Nonetheless, she knew that they were not meant to be. It just wouldn’t work between them. If they were to be together, they wouldn’t get along.
So Elvira had only had a secret crush on Ethan. She had never considered being his girlfriend.
Distance lends enchantment to the view. He was even more charming in her imagination.
What happened next proved that she was right.
When she heard that Ethan liked her, she was surprised, supposing that she might have shown too much affection for him and had caused rumors.
Until one day, Ethan himself declared his love for her. Even then she wondered whether it was a dream.
