Winnie looked at his smile as well as his wound in bandage. She had a deep breath and nodded lightly, "Yes, it is."

Tony was still worried about Saxon’s wound. He asked Saxon "Is it really all right? Do you need to ask for the family doctor? I am afraid the clinic was too simple and not professional enough…"

He insisted to send for the doctor. Winnie was unhappy that her father cared so much about Saxon.

Saxon refused to ask for the doctor. He told Tony he used to get away with much more serious wounds in the army and this was nothing at all. And then he added, "And I have enjoyed a very happy time in the clinic. Actually, I am very thankful for being wounded…" When he spoke this, his eyes focused on Winnie.

But in Winnie’s mind, Saxon was saccharine. Saxon secretly got hold of her hand on the leg. Winnie was nervous and wanted to get rid of him. Saxon knew Winnie dared not to do so openly in front of her father. So he was reckless and smiled at her.

Winnie did fear her father noticed their abnormal relationship. So she dared not struggle too much and endured him.

Seeing two young people were in such a good term so quickly, Tony felt pleased. He said to them, "That’s good you are happy. You are young, I know and I also used to be young…"

Tony paused and then looked at Saxon and said, "Your father and I were the same when we were young…"

Saxon smiled and replied decently, "My father often told us the story about you…and when my father agreed to let me stay in your house during school time, he asked me again and again to give his best regards and thanks to you."

Hearing this, Tony was glad in his heart, but only smiled and answered politely, "That’s all right. We are good friends."

Saxon smiled too and turned around, but to see that Winnie was annoyed by her father’s response. Saxon felt more fun.

After supper, Winnie was still panic-stricken. She feared that Saxon would come and ask for trouble. So she locked herself inside.

Time passed and Saxon didn’t even come to knock at the door. This eased Winnie a little. She lied in bed thinking about the supper time and her father’s unusual behavior.

She knew her father well. He was actually an introverted person. He seldom expressed his concern to others outwardly, especially in front of her and other servants.

But today, in public, he showed his concern about Saxon’s wound, and looked so worried. Worse still, she can see her father’s happiness when Saxon talked about his father.

    Why?

Winnie could not understand why her father was happy when mentioning Saxon’s father, but on the other side, her father didn’t like to go on with the topic about Saxon’s father. Winnie doubted whether her father and the Fus had something in secret.

"Bang…", someone was knocking at the door. Winnie was surprised. The clock on the cupboard told it was late. So Winnie didn’t get off the bed. She supposed it was the granny. She answered lightly, "Granny, I am in bed. Good night."

To her surprise, the knock came again with a familiar gentle voice, "Winnie, it’s me…"

Winnie froze. After quite a while, her throat moved and her hands dragged the quilt corner tight. She asked very tentatively, "It is so late. What’s the matter? I must sleep now. Can we talk about it tomorrow?"

She supposed she had persuaded Saxon. But she heard Saxon laughed. It seemed he had seen her mind clear from the door. He asked, "Didn’t you see your father was acting unusually tonight? Do you want to know the reasons about it, about caring for me and about why so easily he let me come to live here?"

Winnie widely opened her eyes, stared at the door, closed her mouth and dragged her quilt more and more tightly.

Saxon leaned against the wall facing the door. He stared at the closed door, smiled, waited, but had no idea to leave. He was sure in his mind Winnie would open the door for him at last.

When the sound of opening the door did come from behind it, Saxon smiled more brightly. He knew Winnie could never escape from his hand.

The door opened. Winnie stood in front of him being wrapped tightly in long clothes with long sleeves. Saxon was a little surprised but he was not annoyed. He observed her upside down and then asked playfully, "Can I go inside and sit down?"
