Dr. Sun came early the next morning. I had not had breakfast when he came over. He pulled me out of the room, "I bring you breakfast, you can eat it in the car."
I followed him downstairs and asked, "Is it okay to have breakfast this morning? No examination?"
Dr. Sun said, "There is no examination today. The two professors just want to meet with you and briefly talk about your situation. Don't be nervous."
"Oh." The excitement last night passed, and all that remained was nervous.
As I got into Dr. Sun's car, which was parked downstairs, I looked around. There was something wrong. Apart from the policemen, I felt something different.
Dr. Sun started the car and handed me an insulated pot. Inside was the nutritious rice porridge that Mrs. Sun had specially cooked for me. And the fried dumpling Dr. Sun made for me, it was very delicious, I ate five or six immediately.
"You're eating a lot more now." While waiting at the red light, Dr. Sun looked at the empty insulated pot in my hand and smiled.
"Well, this week I started feeling a lot smaller about my pregnancy reaction and eating a lot more." I said.
"Good." Dr. Sun said. "Eating more means that the fetus is well absorbed and well developed."
"Yes." I put the insulated pot at my feet and glanced at the rearview mirror. I didn't know when a gray car followed, which was a very ordinary vehicle model, but I knew the car was going after us.
"What's the matter?" Dr. Sun asked.
"Nothing." I wiped my hands with a wet towel, "By the way, how long can the two professors stay in China?"
"It depends on your health," Dr. Sun said, "they have encountered many cases of intersex pregnancy abroad. This is the first time they have encountered such a case, and they all pay special attention to it. You can rest assured that they will help you with all their zeal."
I nodded, "I see."
Dr. Sun drove the car to the door of the clinic. When I got out of the car, I took another look. There was neither the gray car nor any other suspicious car in sight. But I still felt uneasy.
The two foreign professors were very kindly. They gathered around me as if they had seen some rare treasures, but I did not feel any antipathy. I knew people in academic studies would do, and they were very friendly to me.
We had a great conversation, and I answered all the questions they asked me, finally professor Steve asked me, "Why is the baby's daddy absent? Your partner should always be there for you."
I didn't want to say more to others between me and Jason, so I said, "He is busy."
Professor Steve, an old man in his fifties with an strange accent, said, "I thought Chinese men loved their wives very much, and they should do everything for their wives when they are pregnant. Your husband is not very qualified."
I knew that westerners spoke directly, so I didn't mind the displeasure in his words. What I minded was that he said Jason was my husband, which made me a little embarrassed, after all, Jason and I were not such a relationship.
I blushed and didn't know what to say. Dr. Sun helped me to answer, "Chinese men are under too much pressure at work. It's not easy for them to ask for leave."
Professor Steve nodded, and then moved on to other topics. After chatting for a while, we set a time for the next thorough examination, and Dr. Sun sent me back. On the way back, he told me some instructions and then asked about my child's daddy.
It was the first time Dr. Sun had spoken to me on this subject, and he was a little embarrassed, "Are you really not going to tell him? As your belly gets bigger, there will be a lot of inconvenience in your life, such as bathing and dressing."
I lowered my head, in fact, these questions had long been in my mind, yes, they were really very troublesome, but it was impossible for me to tell Jason, so I could only overcome by myself.
"I don't know why you insist on not letting him know, but I want to tell you that no man would reject his own baby."
But what was the point? I did not love Jason, if I just left him in my side because of a baby, this was not the life I want.
Dr. Sun left me to think about it. I thought I had nothing to think about.
When we got downstairs, I didn't even realize that danger was coming.
After the car stopped, I said bye to Dr. Sun and got out of the car. I had just walked two steps toward the entrance of the corridor when a man rushed out from behind me. The man seemed to have exhausted all his strength to run. By the time I knew it, he was within two meters of me.
A light flashed before my eyes, and I saw clearly that he was holding a shiny knife, pointed at me. I was shocked. For two or three seconds I didn't know what to do. Then, unconsciously, I covered my belly and crouched down on the ground to curl myself up.
It was a pretty awkward position, no man should be in this position when facing a gangster. Besides, I was a former special soldier.
The expected pain did not come to me, because someone saved me, for I heard the other one running to him and the screams because of broken bones.
All this happened in just ten seconds, and I was sweating profusely and breathing unsteadily.
Someone called my name and tried to lift me up. I leaned on the ground with one hand, my other hand was holding my belly, began to tremble.
"How are you, Kevin?" Dr. Sun took my hand and shouted anxiously.
I bit my lip, trying to keep my voice down, "My stomach hurts."
"Relax. Let's get in the car first, and then you can tell me how it hurts." Dr. Sun kept trying to comfort me. "Can you get up by yourself?"
I raised my head and saw Jason and two policemen had tied the gangster with a belt, then he ran to squat down in front of me, asked, "Are you okay?"
Dr. Sun shouted anxiously beside me, "Don't ask any more questions. Get him into my car and go to my clinic right away."
Jason took my arm, turned to squat down to put me on his back. Dr. Sun shouted,"Stupid. You can't do that, you should hold him in your arms, understand?"
Under Dr. Sun's urging, Jason stood up in a trance, holding me in his arms, he ran to the car.
