Elvira had been sullen ever since they left the He family's residence. When she and Nigel were back home, she walked into the living room without even changing her shoes, and slumped onto the sofa.
Staring at the little angels on the ceiling, she had a weird feeling, but she couldn't describe it.
Nigel sensed there was something wrong about her. He grabbed her slippers, walked over to her and helped her change into slippers. Then he asked the servants to change the stained white carpet.
"What's wrong?"
he asked.
Elvira tilted her head and met his bright concerned eyes.
"These little angels are beautiful,"
she replied absent-mindedly.
Nigel looked up too. In the medieval painting, the angels were smiling at him.
She didn’t answer his question. There had to be something on her mind. After giving her head a light pat, he asked again what was bothering her.
He hoped that it wasn’t because of his family.
Elvira told him honestly that she felt uncomfortable around Sienna, Preston and Gretchen.
She didn’t know what had triggered that feeling. It was the strongest when she was around Gretchen. When Gretchen saw her and Nigel off, the look in the girl’s eyes gave Elvira chills. She still trembled a little to think about it at this moment.
Nigel bowed his head when he heard her out, as if he was pondering over something.
After a while, he raised his head thoughtfully.
"Elv, it's a long story between me and Sienna and Preston."
He looked at her intently. There was a myriad of emotions in his eyes. "If you want to know, I’ll tell you everything.
Gretchen is my childhood playmate. Her family is close to mine."
‘Childhood playmate?
So they grew up together?
That means they have known each other for many years. How can I compete against that?’
By then, Elvira had figured out why Gretchen had been hostile towards her. Does she have a crush on Nigel?
Elvira had to know, so she decided to ask Nigel for an answer.
It might sound blunt,
but that was her. Simple and frank.
She didn’t want there to be misunderstanding between her and Nigel. However, there was a trace of timidity in her nature.
When there was a problem, she needed some time to process it first, to summon up her courage before she could face it like a soldier.
Many new problems had emerged after they had gotten married. She learned to solve each of them.
"Does Gretchen like you?"
she asked, biting her lower lip nervously as she looked him in the eye, waiting for his answer.
Nigel was taken aback by her bluntness, but he was happy to hear her ask. Is she jealous?
To keep his emotion in check,
he lowered his head to conceal his smile. Then he lifted his head and tell her in a serious tone, "Yes, she has had a thing for me for many years."
He even feigned a helpless expression. He stared at her, as if trying to read her mind.
Disappointment and surprise were evident on her face. Her doubts had been confirmed.
All of a sudden, anger surged through Elvira’s body. She didn’t why she was angry or whom she was angry at. Anyway, she was unhappy.
She stood up and stalked upstairs.
Nigel called behind her, but she ignored him. He watched her walk into her bedroom and slam the door shut.
A smile crept over his lips.
He was sure his wife was jealous.
Elvira didn’t know how to hide her feelings. All her emotions were written on her face and in her moves.
When he was certain that she had gotten jealous because Gretchen liked him,
Nigel felt on top of the world.
Is she starting to care about me?
He was so happy that he even forgot to comfort her.
After a long while, he remembered it and ran upstairs.
The door wasn’t locked. He walked inside quietly and moved over to her bedside.
Elvira was lying in bed with her eyes closed. When she calmed down, she regretted having left Nigel alone in the living room. Will he get mad?
What bothered her even more was that she didn’t know why she was angry.
What am I angry about?
It seemed the anger had just popped out from nowhere.
She had never acted like that, because she didn’t get angry easily.
Could it be...that...I was jealous? She shook her head. No, it couldn’t be. Why should I be jealous?
I’m not even his real wife.
It saddened her a little to think of that.
So she closed her eyes tighter and decided not to dwell on anything anymore.
"What are you thinking?"
asked Nigel, giving Elvira a start. She snapped her eyes open, turned and saw his grinning face.
She recalled how aloof and distant he had been in the He family,
but around her, he was like a different person,
so gentle, as if she were in a dream.
When she was angry, he could even acted cheeky just to make her smile.
She really didn’t understand this man.
Thinking of this, she shook her head resignedly.
